What does a Sleep Clinic do?

Firstly, a sleep clinic can come in many forms.

  • There are Hospital run sleep clinics
  • Medical centres
  • Specialist sleep medicine & respiratory practices
  • Independent sleep health clinics
  • Dental sleep medicine clinics
  • Pharmacy or Chemist run sleep clinics
  • Individual specialists, e.g. childrens or paediatric carers

That’s quite a choice. Where do I start?

For the most part, a visit to your GP is recommended to ascertain a course of action. Importantly, action in the first place. Realising you’ve got a problem and doing something about it will go a long way in tackling your sleep disorder. Having it diagnosed, treated, and potentially dealt with, can improve your wellbeing exponentially.

Consequently, a sleep study of some description can be organised. There are a few types. An in depth, overnight sleep study is technically called a Polysomnography, and will measure:

  • Your heart rate
  • Time spent under deep sleep & REM sleep
  • Your breathing patterns
  • Your blood’s oxygen levels
  • Limb & eye movements
  • Noise, including any snoring
  • Your body movements and positioning
  • Wakefulness, and frequency of times waking up
  • Sleep efficiency & stages of your sleep patterns

These can usually be as an inpatient sleep study at a hospital, or a sleep clinic.

There are other types of tests that can be performed such as a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT). These 2 are normally associated with those people predisposed with daytime sleepiness.

Interestingly, there is also an at-home version of a sleep study common among chemist or pharmacy run sleep clinics. You may be ‘wired up’ at one of these sleep clinics and then travel home to perform your sleep test in the comfort of your own bed.

For those who are too young to tell us their problems, there are paediatric specialists that can perform near miracles for tired parents. From educating expectant parents, to babies, to toddlers, and older kids to better sleep hygiene & better sleep habits.

With that in mind, there’s bound to be a sleep clinic near you.

Who or what is better in terms of sleep health solutions?

The treatment options available are many & varied. Here’s some factors to consider:

  • The severity of your sleep disorder
  • The type of sleep disorder you’re suffering from
  • Your budget
  • The impact it’s having on you or your loved one’s life

Let’s look at the options!

Chemist or Pharmacy run Sleep Clinics

In terms of coverage, these providers are the most plentiful in the market. Not only that, the competition this provides keeps their costs competitive too.

Although, there is a trade-off. By and large, their primary service is providing at-home sleep studies, mostly around the $100 mark. Also, their primary focus is the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and its various severities.

Initially, some may provide either a 15-30 min. free phone or online sleep health assessment. From there, a course of action is suggested. This could be from either improving your sleep hygiene for mild obstructive sleep apnoea, to trailing a CPAP machine for severe obstructive sleep apnoea.

If a CPAP machine is a suitable treatment for you, they can be either rented or bought. Prices vary depending on the type & brand starting at ~$700 and up from there.

Bear in mind, the better providers will tailor fit your device based on your level of comfort. It’s a good idea to shop around as there are differing types of CPAP setups.

Sleep Clinics or Services provided by Health Professionals

Respiratory & Sleep Medicine Physicians

In particular, Respiratory & Sleep Medicine Physicians are at the apex in terms of the diagnosis & treatment of various sleep disorders.

They specialise in an array of examination techniques, diagnostic tools, treatment options, and after care.

Furthermore, these doctors have undergone an extra 3 years of extensive academic medical training to attain this speciality.

What may not get picked up at your garden variety home sleep study from a chemist, could invariably be diagnosed by one of these specialist physicians.

Indeed, as with any health issue, a visit to your GP should be your 1st course of action. If you feel your sleeping problems can’t be solved with a home sleep study, then discuss a referral from your GP to a Respiratory & Sleep Medicine Physician.

Sleep Psychologists

As an aside, Sleep Psychologists are no less important in the professional field of sleep health.

Sleep Psychologists use different tools in their arsenal. Many sleep disorders can be derived from physiological, behavioural, psychological, and at times neurological issues.

The root cause of your sleep health problems could be physical – or it may not. Your mind is a powerful organ that needs its rest. The ability to switch off after a long day can be difficult for some, as well as preparing for bedtime.

There’s a number of non-physical factors that can influence your sleep health:

  • Stress – life, work, family, relationships
  • Recreational or prescription drug use
  • Lifestyle
  • Anxiety, depression or other mental health issues
  • Overstimulation – devices, TV etc.
  • Nightmares

Importantly, Sleep Psychologists can dig deep into your consciousness & evaluate strategies to improve your sleep health, and therefore, your wellbeing.

Interestingly, some clinics offer a suite of options housing their own individual specialist clinics for various sleep disorders. If you’re up for it, shop around or use our search function above.
